Attendance Activity

Semester courses are completed in approximately eighty class periods of fifty minutes, and regular attendance is an essential criterion of academic achievement. In order to encourage consistent attendance, Wada College of Management & Science has adopted the following policy:

Any missed class* or classes will result in an attendance file being created on EDLINE. Parents that have included their Contact Number in their registration to EDLINE will receive an Call notification indicating that an attendance file had been created for that specific course. Parents without Call notification can check their students’ attendance at any point during the semester.

If parents or guardians are aware of the absence and a written excuse is provided (other than College sponsored activities) then no further response is necessary. A second contact with the student’s home will be made when a student has missed seven (7) class periods; and a further notice will be issued when a student has been absent for ten (10) class periods. The student will also be interviewed by a Principal, and referred to a guidance counselor when s/he has missed ten (10) classes.

When a student has missed twelve class periods, a vice Principal will inform the student that s/he must appear before the Attendance Committee and explain his/her absences. Parents/Guardians will be invited to the Attendance Committee hearing also. The committee will decide whether that student be allowed to continue attending classes or be suspended for the remainder of the semester. If the student is allowed to continue attending s/he will not be permitted to miss any class period or to be tardy without an acceptable excuse**. In either case, the student will be permitted to write his/her examinations. The student may return to College in the next semester with a fresh record of attendance.

If a student is suspended by the attendance committee, that student will become an eight day student. This means that the protocol described above will be followed but the steps will occur at 4, 6, and 8 days absent. The designation of “eight day student” will remain in effect until the student graduates.

Students must consider the effect on their attendance of participation in such activities as family trips, school trips, sports, drama, and other extra-curricular interests. Such absences will be counted. Furthermore, students should not be allowed to leave a class in one subject to perform a task related to another subject. Students are also expected to be punctual, and to be in their classrooms before the final bell.

The objectives of the Wada College of Management Science’ attendance Activities are to:

  • Encourage maximum class attendance;
  • Encourage students to apply their time and attention toward obtaining the maximum benefits for their education;
  • Place the primary responsibility for college attendance upon students and parents;
  • Provide teachers, counselors, and administrators more time to accomplish their primary responsibilities as educators;
  • Eliminate excessive absenteeism;
  • Provide alternative consequences for excessive absences; and
  • Reward good and perfect attendance.

Roles & Responsibilities Related to Attendance Committees

Various committees are formed in the College for the smooth and efficient management of activities. It also gives the opportunity to the faculty to grow and develop in their extracurricular activity/field and administrative skills. The committees are constituted by the Conveners and other Teaching staff members.

Extracurricular Activities

Absences for extracurricular activities do not count as absences as they apply to the WCMS attendance policy unless a student accumulates more than five for one semester .

If a student accumulates more than five absences for extracurricular activities for one semester in one class or subject, each absence over five becomes an unexcused absence, and these unexcused absences apply to the WCMS attendance policy.

Teachers must record each time a student misses a class or subject to participate in an extracurricular activity. Extracurricular activities are those College-sponsored or College-sanctioned activities that are not directly related to instruction of the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, but might haan indirect relation to some areas of the curriculum. They offer worthwhile and significant contributions to a student’s personal, physical, and social development.

Participation in extracurricular activities is a privilege and not a right, and students must meet specific requirements in order to participate. Activities may include, but are not limited to performances, contests, demonstrations, displays, and club activities.

Co-curricular Activities

Certain activities, although carried out in locations outside the regular classroom  ,are directed specifically toward the Essential Knowledge and Skills in one or more subject. The district places special emphasis on these activities, designated co-curricular, because they enhance learning. Administrators and teachers should encourage student participation in such approved co-curricular activities. Participation in an approved co-curricular activity directed specifically toward the Essential Knowledge and Skills in one or more subjects does NOT count as an absence against the five days allowed for extracurricular activities in the subject(s).
